Dive into the world of local, seasonal food with us!
Our classes are led by renowned baker Michael James and his partner Pippa. A chef by profession and a baker by passion, through our classes Michael shares his considerable knowledge and skill, interwoven with the Urbanstead vision of an abundant, joyous and delicious lifetime of great eating.
Learn about fermentation, or bake your way from savoury to sweet in classes that are informative, interactive and loads of fun. Whichever class you choose, our aim is that you will go home with a full belly, inspired to apply new techniques at home, informed and empowered to think differently about the food you choose.

One class only! Tuesday 10th March. Learn the secrets of our Hot Cross Buns, from spice perfection and candied fruit to the softest crumb.
For a closer look at what goes into the best-tasting buns and Michael’s best tips for the perfect texture, join us for this very special class. We’ll make buns together from start to finish, and you will leave confident and ready for Easter baking.
We create a relaxed and inclusive environment and cater for all ranges of ability from beginners to experienced bakers. This class is a mix of hands on and demonstration, with plenty of time to ask questions and create connections.
The class includes:
a light supper and drinks
your bakes to take home
recipe booklet
Please bring your favourite apron and a pen to make notes. You will be taking your makes home and we will have boxes on hand, but would love you to bring containers to reduce waste.
Class starts at 6:30pm and will finish around 8:30pm.

The class is held at Urbanstead - 203 Langridge Street, Abbotsford. Free street parking is available nearby.
We are well connected to public transport. We are a five minute walk from Collingwood station (Hurstbridge and Mernda Lines). The 12 and 109 trams run along Victoria Street, also a five minute walk. Multiple buses run along nearby Hoddle Street.
Class cancellations
Our classes are non-refundable and non-transferable unless we are able to fill your place from our waitlist.
In the unlikely event that we have to cancel a class we will offer a transfer to a new date or a full refund.

A sweet baking class exploring that nostalgic favourite - biscuit sandwiches!
We’ll be making Wagon Wheels, Monte Carlos and Peanut Butter Cookies. You’ll learn multiple techniques in a class that is fun and relaxed.

From the ingredients you choose to the techniques you use, from basic puff to wholegrain and other variations, this class is a deep dive into the wonderful world of puff pastry. We’ll explore the many uses of puff from savoury to sweet, demystify the process and help you gain confidence and skills for all of your pastry bakes.
